    infectious agent
  3. anthrax - an infectious, potentially fatal disease of warm-blooded animals, especially of cattle and sheep, caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis
  4. bacteria - unicellular prokaryotic microorganism of the class Schizomycetes that varies in terms of morphology, oxygen and nutritional
requirements, and motility, and may be free-living, saprophytic, or pathogenic in plants or animals
  5. bioterrorism - the use of biological agents, such as pathogenic organisms or agricultural pests, for terrorist purposes
  6. diagnostics - serving to identify a particular disease, pathogen, or hazard
  7. epidemiology - the branch of public health that deals with the study of the causes, distribution, and control of disease in populations
  8. pathogen - an agent that causes disease, especially a living microorganism such as a bacterium or fungus

Component 2

  1. Advanced Nucleic Acid Analyzer (ANAA) - detecting device used to identify specified matter in a matter of minutes
  2. antibiotics - substance, such as penicillin or streptomycin, produced by or derived from certain fungi, bacteria, and other organisms, that can destroy or inhibit the growth of other microorganisms
  3. ASM - American Society for Microbiology
  4. Autonomous Pathogen Detection System (APDS) - a completely automated "biosmoke alarm" that detects pathogens in the air
  5. CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  6. Cipro (ciprofloxacin) - drug developed by the German company Bayer that is effective against a wide array of pathogens, most commonly used against anthrax
  7. cryptography - the process of communicating in or deciphering secret, encoded information
  8. DNA - a nucleic acid that carries the genetic information in the cell, capable of self-replication and synthesis of RNA
  9. DNA synthesis - the linking together of nucleotides to form DNA
  10. encryption - putting into code or ciphering for the purpose of security
  11. nVIZn - program developed by Illumitek to handle data monitoring analysis
  12. nucleic acid - a group of complex compounds found in all living cells and viruses, composed of purines, pyrimidines, carbohydrates, and phosphoric acid
  13. microbe - a minute life form; a microorganism, especially a bacterium that causes disease
  14. microbiology - the branch of biology that deals with microorganisms and their effects on other living organisms
  15. pathology - the scientific study of the nature of disease and its causes, processes, development, and consequences
  16. PhRMA - Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, leading research based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies
  17. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) - a technique for amplifying DNA sequences in vitro by separating the DNA into two strands and incubating it with oligonucleotide primers and DNA polymerase

Component 3

  1. HAZMAT - hazardous material
  2. toxicology - the study of the nature, effects, and detection of poisons and the treatment of poisoning
